Abstract

The emergence of life may reflect a deep interplay between universal physical laws and computational information processes. In this paper we examine the thesis advanced by LF Yadda that life’s “hidden arrow of efficiency” arises from fundamental statistical physics and thermodynamics, and we contrast this with the inherently algorithmic nature of genetic information (the DNA→RNA→protein chain of molecular biology). We review how random fluctuations (Brownian motion) and energy flows in far-from-equilibrium systems can drive self-organization and entropy-dissipating structureslfyadda.compmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, providing a physical substrate for Darwinian evolution. Introduction

Is life an improbable accident or an expected outcome of fundamental laws? Traditional origin-of-life scenarios often picture a “primordial soup” where chemistry fortuitously, perhaps with lightning and lucky chance, produced the first organisms. In contrast, a growing school of thought argues that basic physical principles – notably thermodynamics and statistical mechanics – inevitably lead matter toward states we identify as “living” under the right conditions. For example, physicist Erwin Schrödinger famously suggested in What Is Life? that living systems maintain order by feeding on “negative entropy” (free energy) from their environment. More recently, theorists have proposed that non-equilibrium systems naturally evolve toward configurations that dissipate energy more effectively, a phenomenon dubbed the “hidden arrow of efficiency”pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. In this view, the combination of Brownian motion (thermal noise) and energy flows can spontaneously produce self-organized, entropy-producing structures, providing a physical foundation for Darwinian evolution of complexitylfyadda.compmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

In doing so, we aim to chart a path toward a more unified understanding of life that respects both its physical and informational dimensions.

Literature Review

Physical Self-Organization: Brownian Motion and Thermodynamics

Random thermal motion is ubiquitous in matter, and in far-from-equilibrium settings it can drive order. The phenomenon of Brownian motion – the erratic jiggle of microscopic particles – was elucidated by Einstein in 1905 as the result of innumerable molecular collisions. Building on these ideas, Ilya Prigogine and colleagues developed the theory of dissipative structures, showing that far-from-equilibrium systems can spontaneously organize. When a fluid is heated from below, tiny random fluctuations can trigger the formation of convection rolls (Bénard cells) once a critical energy flux is exceeded. Prigogine described this as “order through fluctuation”: small stochastic changes can amplify into new macroscopic order if energy continuously flows through the systemlfyadda.com. In summary, the literature on non-equilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics provides a rich account of how disorderly molecular motion and energy gradients can spontaneously produce structure. Brownian motion injects randomness, and dissipation selects for more efficient energy usage, so that “order from chaos” can arise without any teleology. These ideas frame life itself as a natural outgrowth of physical laws: energy-driven chemical networks that self-organize into replicating, entropy-dissipating systems, as long as there is a constant supply of fuel.

Darwinian Evolution and Universal Selection

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection fundamentally transformed our understanding of how order arises in biology. Darwin showed that simple rules – random variation, differential survival, and inheritance – suffice to explain the adaptive complexity of life over time. In evolutionary genetics, even neutral processes like genetic drift can be modeled as random walks analogous to Brownian motion on a fitness landscapelfyadda.com. More importantly, once any chemical system begins to produce replicating entities (even imperfectly), the Darwinian triad of variation, selection, and replication will operate to refine complexitylfyadda.com.

This insight extends beyond living cells. The idea of “universal Darwinism” (Dawkins 1983) posits that any system with variation and heredity will evolve by natural selection, regardless of substrate. On Earth, laboratory experiments have illustrated Darwinian evolution at the molecular level. Ecologists and astrobiologists have extended Darwinian thinking to larger scales, suggesting that selection principles might apply at ecosystem or even cosmic levels. Richard Dawkins originally noted that memes (ideas) and computer programs can be seen as digital replicators subject to selection, just as genes are. Some speculative theories (e.g. cosmological natural selection) even analogize the birth of universes to evolutionary branching. While such analogies must be drawn cautiously, they reflect the broad appeal of Darwinian logic: any repetitive, competitive process tends to yield higher-order order.

An intriguing link between randomness and selection is that small random fluctuations (mutations) provide the “raw material” that selection acts upon, while selection can be viewed as a directional bias. Some mathematical models in population genetics treat gradual evolution as a form of biased random walklfyadda.com. In effect, one might think of Brownian motion on a fitness landscape: blind exploration (drift) punctuated by uphill climbs (selection). This analogy further blurs the line between inanimate statistical processes and biological evolution.

Information in Molecular Biology and Biosemiotics

The central dogma of molecular biology (Crick 1958) formalizes a unidirectional flow of information: genetic sequences in DNA are transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into proteins. In modern terms, the genome is a digital storage medium of instructions – essentially a binary code of four nucleotides – while cellular machinery executes these instructions by chemical processes. The information content of a DNA molecule is enormous: a single human cell contains roughly 3×10^9 base pairs, each of which could be viewed as encoding 2 bits of information (since four bases can be represented in binary). By Shannon’s measure, one can quantify the entropy (uncertainty) or information content of nucleotide sequences, but that does not immediately capture meaning or function.

Biosemiotics is a field that explicitly treats the processes of life as semiotic (sign-based) phenomena. It takes seriously the notion that genetic sequences and cellular signals carry “meaning” in a way analogous to language or codes. As Barbieri (2008) summarizes, biosemiotics posits that “life is based on semiosis, i.e., on signs and codes”pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. The genetic code – the mapping from codons to amino acids – is the archetypal organic code, but Barbieri argues it is only the first of many. He suggests that life fundamentally involves two processes: copying (heredity) and coding (sign interpretation)pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Copying (DNA replication) is shaped by standard Darwinian selection, whereas coding involves conventional assignments (like how tRNAs interpret codons), a process Barbieri calls “natural conventions.” This implies a dual mechanism of evolution: the familiar Darwinian one, and a more formal “natural convention” mechanism tied to the emergence of biochemical coding systemspubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

Complementing biosemiotic views is the concept of prescriptive information. Abel and Trevors (2006) argue that biological instructions (like gene regulatory programs) embody prescriptive information that cannot be fully reduced to Shannon information (which measures statistical unpredictability)philarchive.org. Jablonka (2002) similarly notes that “only a living system can make a source into an informational input,” highlighting that semantic information (the aboutness of genetic sequences) requires an interpreter – a cellular machinery or organism – to existphilarchive.org. Attempts to define semantic or functional information purely in physical terms have long been problematicphilarchive.org. In other words, while Shannon entropy can tell us how random a DNA sequence is, it says nothing about whether the sequence encodes a useful protein or a viable metabolic program.

From the computational side, molecular biology increasingly adopts language of algorithms and software. Cells are often likened to computers: DNA and genes are “code,” transcription and translation are program execution, and evolution is the programmer. Zenil et al. These computational perspectives raise important questions: Is the information in a genome just a byproduct of physics (e.g. the thermodynamics of polymerization and base-pairing), or is it something additional – an abstract layer of prescribed functions? Shannon himself warned that information theory deals with syntactic information (symbol frequencies) and not semantics or meaning. In biology, the semantics (protein function, regulatory logic) emerges from biochemical interactions, but a full theory of biological information may require blending physics with concepts from computer science and semiotics. Our review of the literature highlights this tension: life is both a thermodynamic process and an informational process, and understanding it fully demands tools from both domains.

Theoretical Discussion

The Hidden Arrow of Efficiency in Physical Systems

Building on the literature above, we now examine how universal physical laws might bias systems toward life-like organization. The key idea is that energy flows and random fluctuations create a “search and select” dynamic in chemistry. Thermal noise (Brownian motion) continually explores possible molecular configurations, while non-equilibrium energy (sunlight, chemical fuels) acts as a driver that amplifies certain pathways. As systems operate far from equilibrium, configurations that dissipate more energy tend to grow in prevalence. This is sometimes called a dissipative selection principle.

For example, consider two chemical networks competing for the same fuel. If one network happens to self-organize into a catalyst that more effectively breaks down the fuel, it will dissipate energy faster. As it does so, it also may multiply or restructure itself due to autocatalysis. The result is that the more dissipative network can outcompete the other. This idea parallels the recent concept of thermodynamic selection. Babajanyan et al. (2022) explicitly model this: they treat organisms as heat engines drawing on an energy bath. Different strategies (maximizing power vs maximizing efficiency) can prevail depending on resource conditionspmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. If the energy source is effectively infinite (e.g. abundant sunlight), selection favors organisms that operate at maximum efficiency (they use fuel conservatively), whereas if resources are scarce or rapidly depleted, selection favors higher power output even at lower efficiencypmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. More generally, modern statistical mechanics has begun to derive “macroscopic” arrows of time or efficiency from microscopic chaos. Jeremy England’s work is emblematic: he showed that driven many-body systems will tend to evolve toward states that absorb and dissipate more of the external energy, effectively creating order as a side-effect of maximizing entropy production at the microscopic level. In one simplified picture, a molecular assembly spontaneously adopting a structure that oscillates or catalyzes fuel breakdown is exponentially more likely to appear than a randomly frozen structure, because such a structure channels energy more effectively. Thus living systems – which capture free energy and release heat – can be seen as physical devices that naturally arise to maximize environmental entropy production given the constraints of the molecules and energy present.

This arrow of efficiency hypothesis claims that life is not an accident but a typical outcome whenever complex chemistry is driven by flow. Across the literature, one finds supporting evidence in prebiotic chemistry experiments (thermal vents, geothermal pools, etc.), in the ubiquity of organic compounds in interstellar space (implying the building blocks of life form easily), and in simulations showing dissipative adaptation. For instance, if complex molecules randomly form in a warm hydrothermal vent, those that happen to catalyze their own synthesis or create favorable cycles will locally increase entropy production and thus proliferate. Over time this feedback can lead to the emergence of self-replicating cycles, and eventually cells.

Physically, nothing mystical is required: all behavior is governed by Newtonian or quantum laws. The “hidden arrow” is simply a bias encoded in the second law of thermodynamics. As Prigogine emphasized, far-from-equilibrium systems will inevitably organize in ways that increase the overall rate of entropy production, at least until new constraints appear. In this view, Darwinian evolution is a special case of a more general principle: any structure that replicates (from crystal grains to galaxies, metaphorically) must obey thermodynamic selection. As Babajanyan et al. note, even organisms face a power-efficiency tradeoff akin to that in heat enginespmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Enzymes and cells can be viewed as nanoscopic engines, extracting work (ATP) from fuel, and evolution tunes these “engines” along the frontier of the power-efficiency Pareto curve.

The Informational Dimension: Central Dogma as a Computational Process

Biological information processing operates in a qualitatively different mode. The central dogma involves discrete sequences and symbol-like rules that, at first glance, seem independent of continuous physical fields. A DNA molecule is a linear polymer, but its meaning is decoded via a translation table (the genetic code) that is not entailed by chemistry alone. In physical terms, base-pairing is driven by hydrogen bonds and thermodynamics, but which nucleotide sequence appears in a genome is shaped by historical contingencies and selection for function.

Viewed as computation, DNA functions like a program. Consider transcription and translation: the base sequence of DNA is transcribed into an RNA string, which a ribosome then reads in codons to assemble amino acids. Each step follows algorithmic rules (base complementarity, codon assignment) that a physicist could trace to molecular interactions, yet the global flow is digital – discrete instructions. This gives rise to questions of algorithmic complexity and computability in biology. For example, the genome effectively encodes an organism’s morphology via developmental processes: in principle, one could think of the genome as a compressed description of the organism. Kolmogorov complexity measures the length of the shortest program that reproduces a given output; applied to genomes, one wonders how compressible an organism’s blueprint is. Many biologists now consider concepts from algorithmic information theory to probe these ideas. Zenil and co-workers, for instance, use computational methods to quantify the complexity of biological networks and to predict drug efficacy from gene expression data. They observe that living systems can create “patterns of life” whose statistical properties resemble those of simple computer programsar5iv.org.

The image in Figure 【74】 (reproduced here) illustrates this principle. It shows the space-time evolution of the simple Wolfram Rule 30 cellular automaton starting from a trivial initial condition. Despite the rule being extremely simple, the resulting pattern (triangular in shape) is highly irregular. As Zenil et al. explain, an observer with limited data (“Common Observer”) might wrongly infer that the pattern comes from a complex mechanism, whereas an “Ideal Observer” with knowledge of the source code would recognize its simplicityar5iv.org【74†】. This underscores a key point: complex outputs (life’s structures) can emerge from simple programs (genetic algorithms), but deducing those programs from partial observations may be intractablear5iv.org【74†】. By analogy, the “software” of life (DNA) may be fundamentally simple in structure (built from just four bases), yet extremely complex in content.

While the analogy between genomes and software is useful, biological computation also has important differences. A major distinction is that computer programs are usually hand-designed to achieve a specific task, whereas genetic “programs” arise through blind evolution. Nevertheless, evolution acts as a de facto “programmer” of lifear5iv.org. In an information-theoretic sense, the genome is full of redundancies and patterns – for example, many codons code for the same amino acid – which reduce its Shannon entropy. But it also contains targeted signals (promoters, splice sites) whose presence or absence dramatically affects cellular function. Shannon information measures (like nucleotide entropy) can quantify the expected “surprise” of a sequence, but they do not capture the functional information – the fact that a particular gene sequence yields a working enzyme. The computational perspective also highlights theoretical limits. Even if one had complete laws of physics, the dynamic processes of life are so complex that only simulation (“experimentation”) can fully explore their outcomesar5iv.org. In practical terms, this means that understanding life may require algorithmic thinking, not just solving differential equations. Approaches like genetic algorithms in computer science mirror natural evolution, and concepts like programmability and Turing universality are being applied to biology. For instance, the immune system has been likened to a “software debugging” toolar5iv.org that learns to recognize and correct cellular “bugs” (pathogens).

Physicalism Versus Informationalism: Can Biology Be Reduced?

We now address the central question: are the informational processes of life fully entailed by physical laws, or do they imply an additional “layer” of computation or semiotics? A strict materialist or reductionist view holds that everything about biology, including genetic information, is ultimately physical. According to this perspective, information is just a way we describe physical configurations – for example, Shannon himself described information in terms of statistical properties of symbols, without invoking any mysterious forces. Landauer’s aphorism “Information is physical” captures this sentiment: computing (including what DNA does) cannot occur except in accordance with thermodynamics and material constraintsw2agz.com. In principle, every transcription event or protein folding is a physical-chemical process obeying quantum and statistical laws, so nothing supernatural is needed.

Even highly abstract notions in biology can be given material grounding. For instance, one might ask: why do cells use mRNA as an intermediary rather than copying DNA directly into proteins? The answer lies in chemistry: RNA provides a flexible, controllable strand that can be produced and degraded cheaply compared to editing the genome. The choice of nucleic acids and amino acids themselves can be explained by chemical stability and availability. Similarly, the genetic code’s mapping (which base triplets code for which amino acids) has physicochemical underpinnings, and likely evolved for error tolerance and optimality. Proponents of physicalism argue that all such choices can, at least in principle, be deduced from chemistry and evolution.

However, several theorists have objected that purely physical accounts leave gaps. They point out that while physics can explain how molecules interact, it cannot, by itself, explain why a particular sequence is functional or why a code exists at allphilarchive.org. The very notion of “prescription” – that DNA carries instructions for building an organism – seems to involve a semantic content that is not present in physics equations. Jablonka has argued that semantic information requires a sender-receiver context: in a gene, the “sender” is the DNA polymerase or replication machinery and the “receiver” is the protein synthesis system, which assigns meaning to codon sequencesphilarchive.org. Such aboutness is inherently biological; inorganic matter does not encode or decode messages in the same way. This circular, self-referential aspect has led some to argue that life’s informational nature is irreducible to simpler parts.

Philosophically, the debate echoes classic materialism versus dualism (or pancomputationalism) in biology. From a materialist standpoint, there is no ontological distinction between information and matter: information is a state of matter. Wheeler’s radical view (“it from bit”) flips this, asserting that physical reality itself arises from yes/no informational eventshistoryofinformation.com. If taken literally, Wheeler’s stance suggests an informational monism – that physics emerges from a deeper computational substrate. While intriguing, this idea is speculative and not widely accepted in mainstream biology; it blurs into metaphysics. Nevertheless, it illustrates one extreme: if Wheeler is right, then life’s complexity is just one manifestation of universal information dynamics, not demanding new laws beyond information theory and quantum mechanics.

Between these extremes lies a more modest “weak emergence” view: life’s information processes emerge from but are not strictly explained by low-level physics. In other words, information and semantics are high-level phenomena that supervene on physics but aren’t easily predictable from it. Proponents might cite, for example, that even knowing all atomic interactions in a cell might not allow one to predict the next mutation that will be favored; the historical contingency and large combinatorial space of sequences mean biology has an “algorithmic freedom.” In this view, while no mystical vital force is needed, new explanatory language (from cybernetics, computation, semiotics) is required to fully capture biological reality.

Algorithmic information theory strengthens the case for non-reducibility.
